A pair of 16” vintage fine art oiran or geisha (a female entertainer who was trained in music, dance, and social skills).dolls made in Japan. These old Japanese human figure dolls are called ningyo and have served as playthings, religious icons, good luck charms, and ornaments for centuries.
The two ningyo feature beautifully hand-painted silk faces. They are elaborately dressed in brocade silk dangling obi & kimono robes tied in front along with with nagajuban, or under-kimonos. The geisha dolls wear tabi (white split-toed socks) indicating they are indoors (where they would be dancing). The dolls feature real human hair in traditional hairstyles. One of the oiran dolls is posed in an animated dance with red hats. The other doll is wearing a tiara and jewels and is dancing with a kabuto (samurai helmet).

You won’t find finer geisha dolls anywhere. I have looked extensively on eBay for similar ones.
They have been kept out of the sunlight. There is some aging of the hand carved wood & thin glass cases which have protected the dolls all these years, but the dolls themselves are in MINT CONDITION and of the highest quality.
One case has been repaired but all parts are original.
